Exciting news for our province! Today, Statistics Canada released retail trade figures for April 2024, and Saskatchewan is leading the nation in month-over-month growth! Retail sales in our province surged by an impressive 8.5%, totaling $2.2 billion in April 2024 (seasonally-adjusted) compared to March 2024.
Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison proudly stated, “Saskatchewan’s nation-leading retail trade numbers show the provincial economy is strong and continuing to grow. Our retailers are meeting consumer demands and driving significant economic growth. This, in turn, is creating more jobs and opportunities for the people of our province.”
The positive trend continues with a 5.6% year-over-year increase in retail sales compared to April 2023.
The Monthly Retail Trade Survey collects data on sales, including e-commerce, from retailers across Canada, providing a comprehensive overview of the retail landscape.
Saskatchewan is also seeing significant growth in other areas. We ranked first in month-over-month growth in building construction investments with a 9.7% increase and saw a 21.8% year-over-year increase in this sector over April 2023.
Our 2023 real GDP reached a record high of $77.9 billion, marking a 1.6% increase and placing us second in the nation for real GDP growth, surpassing the national average of 1.2%.
Private capital investment is projected to reach $14.2 billion in 2024, a 14.4% increase over 2023—the highest anticipated percentage increase in Canada.
Our export growth is also remarkable, totaling over $101.9 billion for 2022 and 2023 combined—a 52.2% increase from the previous two-year period of 2020-2021.
With the launch of “Securing the Next Decade of Growth: Saskatchewan’s Investment Attraction Strategy” and the new investSK.ca website, we are well-positioned to amplify growth and drive further development in our beautiful province.
